It was developed in the 1930s by American psychologist Edmund Jacobson. PMR is often recommended and used for stress relief, nervousness, insomnia, inner tension, anxiety, and performance difficulties. The principle behind PMR involves consciously perceiving physical sensations during both tension and relaxation and recognizing the differences.
